USS Platte (AO 186) was commissioned on 29 January 1983 and decommissioned on 30 June 1999. During her 16 years of distinguished service, she played a vital role in sustaining the U.S. Navy's forward presence by delivering fuel, supplies, and—perhaps most importantly to her crew and the sailors she supported—mail to ships while underway. Her ability to replenish ships at sea enabled carrier strike groups to remain on station longer, extend their operational reach, and respond rapidly to crises around the world.

Throughout her service, USS Platte replenished countless U.S. and allied naval vessels in support of critical operations. Her most notable deployment came during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm from December 1990 through June 1991. During this historic deployment, the "Fifth and Finest Oiler" earned the well-deserved reputation as the "Preferred Oiler of the Persian Gulf," reflecting her exceptional performance and the dedication of her crew.

In February 1992, USS Platte departed Norfolk, Virginia, for Avondale Shipyard in Louisiana, where she underwent an extensive Jumboization modernization. The ship was literally cut in half, and a 37.5-meter (123-foot) mid-body section was inserted, significantly increasing her fuel-carrying capacity. Returning to the fleet in December 1992, she continued to provide outstanding logistical support for another seven years. Among her many accomplishments was escorting USS Kitty Hawk during the carrier's historic transit from the East Coast to her new homeport on the West Coast, navigating around the southern tip of South America.

While USS Platte's operational achievements are an important part of her legacy, her greatest strength was always her crew. Through demanding deployments, long watches, challenging missions, and shared successes, sailors forged friendships rooted in trust, resilience, and mutual respect.
